Art theft at University

Several significant items - including a painting by C.F. Goldie and a set of Colin McCahon manuscripts - were stolen from The University of Auckland during the Christmas holiday period.

The theft occurred during a break-in at the University. The most significant of the items stolen was the small oil on canvas painting by Goldie, a portrait of Hori Te Ruinga Pokai. The painting recently returned to New Zealand after being in Canada for more than 70 years.

A large unbound copy of the Oxford Lectern Bible and a set of seven Colin McCahon manuscript poems were also taken during the break-in.

Anyone with information relating to the whereabouts of any of these items should contact Auckland Police on 09 302 6471 or 09 302 6737.

Detective Sergeant Richard Veacock
